In 1827, after the Hicksite Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Abington Quarterly Meeting established a monthly meeting in the city for Friends of Philadelphia and Byberry. It became part of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) in 1828. From 1828 to 1857, this meeting held its sessions at a meeting house on Cherry Street. Fair Hill Burial Ground was established on land bequeathed by George Fox in 1690 to Friends in Philadelphia, including six acres for a meeting house, school house, and burial place. There were only a few interments from 1707 to 1795, when burials ceased temporarily because the land was leased to a tenant farmer.
